One thing I love about my job as a photographer is that I am constantly being introduced to such inspiring people! I love the opportunities that I have to hear stories of how couples came together, details about the places they are currently in and excited plans for the future. What is even better than hearing these stories is that I have the opportunity to walk beside these inspiring people and to be a part of the most exciting time of their lives! I recently got together with Chris and Sandra to celebrate their engagement, and came away inspired by their love for God and each other, and the plans that they have for the future!
I recently spent some time reading about wedding traditions throughout history. It was really interesting to learn the origins of traditions that we uphold today. Did you know that originally, the wedding cake was not eaten at all, but thrown at the bride and groom and then arranged in a pile for them to kiss over. Success in this tradition was supposed to bring good luck, prosperity and children. I for one, am glad we get to eat the cake now! One tradition that some cultures have maintained is the wedding celebration that lasts for days. In some areas, the wedding feast could be anywhere from 3 to 7 days long! Of course, this would be more difficult in our culture, but there are some weddings, like Jason and Megs, that feel so joyful and celebratory that they could easily go on that long! Many things have changed throughout history, but Jason and Meg’s wedding reaffirms for me that there is no better way to celebrate than to gather with close family and friends, delicious food and drink and joyful music.
What can I say about Jon and Kristin except that they are exceptionally kind, a joy to be around and full of love for one another! When I first met Kristin, earlier this year, Jon was across the country in Washington for some military training, so it was awesome to have the opportunity to get together with both of them for their engagement session. We got to know each other as we explored McConnell’s Mill, and the surrounding areas. Jon and Kristin are getting married next summer, and moving to a destination to be determined. Jon is applying to law programs, and that process will determine their next step. I can tell that for Jon and Kristin, it’s not so much the “where?” but the “who with?” that matters most, and even after one evening, I could tell that they’ve got that part figured out perfectly!
I have had the opportunity of the past couple of years to work in so many beautiful and unique reception venues. I love the different atmospheres and the way that they reflect each couple’s tastes and preferences. With that in mind, you can imagine how excited I was when Bobby and Emily invited me to help them celebrate their wedding at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh! Talk about an awesome space for a wedding! It was so neat to see the way the cafe at the museum was transformed into a beautiful and elegant backdrop for Bobby and Emily’s celebration! Bobby and Emily’s day was incredible from start to finish, and one of the highlights for me was trying to find spots on the North Shore for photos right as the Pitt Football game ended and the Pirates game was set to begin. I will definitely remember this wedding as one of my most fun and unique!
I love the way that each wedding day brings together two families and two stories. Throughout the planning process, I get to know the bride and groom pretty well as we share ideas and visions, and collaborate on a schedule for the wedding day. By the day of the wedding, I feel like I know the couple quite well, but in most cases, I don’t have the opportunity to meet the family and friends until the big day. I love the opportunities that I have to spend with family and friends throughout the day, and these interactions always help to fill out the story of the couple that I have come to know. As with any story, one piece of it, taken out of context, can be beautiful on it’s own. But when that storyline is seen in it’s proper context, the details and supporting cast make the narrative that much more lovely and enjoyable! This was certainly the case with Justin and Sally!
